OUA West Soccer Awards

Ontario University Athletics announced the recipients of the 2009 West major award winners and all-stars on November 4th.

MVP honours went to Kanagawa, Japan native and second year York University striker Ami Otaki, after she finished the season with an incredible 14 goals in 14 games. Rookie of the Year honours went to Otaki’s York teammate, Nicole Campbell of Scarborough.

Coach of the year was awarded to Wilfred Laurier’s Barry McLean while the West community service award went to a deserving Maria Cusimano of McMaster for her dedication to leadership and volunteering in the community.

AUS Soccer All-Stars Announced

The Atlantic University Sport women’s all-star soccer selections were made this week as the regular season drew to a close.
UPEI and Dalhousie led the league in all-stars with four each while Memorial, St FX, Cape Breton, Saint Mary’s, Moncton and Mount Allison also had at least one player named to the first or second team.

The top vote getter of this year’s all-star selections was fourth year UPEI striker Tessa Roche of Charlottetown who scored a league leading 13 goals this season.

The selections were made by the AUS head coaches and determined by the performance of each player during the regular season.

All-stars from St. FX, Moncton, Cape Breton, Memorial, Dalhousie and UPEI will be battling it out this weekend as they vie for the Atlantic Conference title championships hosted by MUN November 6-8.

Concordia take Quebec championship in OT

The Concordia Stingers women’s rugby team will advance to the CIS national championships after edging out the Laval Rouge et Or in a 13-10 overtime victory Saturday.

The Stingers will be heading to nationals with some confidence as four of their players were named to the Q.S.S.F. (Quebec Student Sport Federation) all-star team last week.

The four all-stars are: Lock Claire Hortop of Mississauga, Ontario (co-captain), Inside centre Jackie Tittley of Kirkland, Quebec (co-captain), Hooker Vanessa Grillo of Kirkland Quebec and
Hughanna Gaw of Elgin Quebec who was also named QSSF rookie of the year.

Anna Rice still number one

Top seeded Canadian badminton player Anna Rice defended her ranking last week as she took on fellow Canadian Jocelyn Ko in the Pan American Championships.

Rice won the match by winning 21-17 and 21-14.

Other Pan Am champs were doubles partners Milaine Cloutier and Valerie St. Jacques who defeated their Canadian teammates Fiona McKee and Grace Gao in three games 13-21, 21-14 and 21-17.

Team Canada brings home 3 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze in individual play and a gold in the team event from the games held in Guadalajara, Mexico.

ST. FX takes AUS titles

Congratulations go out to the St Francis Xavier X-women who clinched AUS titles in both Cross country and rugby this weekend.

St FX are taking home the Atlantic University Sport championship for cross country for the second year in a row and the rugby title for an incredible 12th year in a row.

Profile: Danielle Goyette

Danielle Goyette was born in St Nazaire Quebec on January 30th 1966.

Fast forward almost exactly forty years later and Goyette was far from St Nazaire. In 2006, Danielle Goyette led the Canadian winter Olympic team into the Turin games as the flagbearer for the opening ceremonies in Italy.

Following her flagbearing duties, Goyette (the oldest member of the team) helped lead her Canadian womens hockey team to a gold medal, the team’s second gold in as many Olympics, their third medal all-time at the games.

With nine World Championship medals (a Canadian record), three Olympic medals, over 200 career international points and 171 games played, Goyette retired in 2008 as one of the most prolific hockey players to wear the Canadian red and white.

Hocktoberfest 2009

Hocktoberfest, a one of a kind hockey tournament for girls, will be held next weekend, October 22nd through 25th in Windsor Ontario.

In just its second year, The Hocktoberfest Female Hockey Festival will host over 100 teams from Canada, the United States and England in multiple age groups and divisions.

Girls participating in this festival will have the chance to obviously play several games, but also take part in clinics, workshops, displays and contests which are all included in the festival experience.

University sports seasons kick off

Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) is back for another great year of action as over 10,000 student athletes and 550 coaches represent 51 post-secondary institutions across Canada.

In competition for 19 national championships in 11 sports, institutions are divided into four regional associations, which are (from west to east):
Canada West, Ontario University Athletics, Quebec Student Sports Federation and Atlantic University Sport.

2009-2010 is already underway for the women of CIS with the field hockey, rugby and soccer seasons already in competition with the basketball, volleyball, ice hockey, swimming all kicking off in the next few weeks.
